우리들 이야기

얼마 전에 한 분과 대화를 하는데 교회의 비리와 함부로 말하는 것 때문에 교회를 다니지 않는다고 했습니다. 저는 그 교회에 그 일이 있을 당시에 그 자리에 있지도 않았지만 한 목사이며 기독교인으로서 미안하다고 말했습니다. 저도 교회에 다니면서 더 많은 기적과 은혜와 변화와 축복을 보았지만, 종종 여러 가지 부정적인 일들을 보고 경험했습니다. 어떤 교회의 목사님이 스캔들이 생겨서 사임하는 것을 보았고, 어떤 집사님은 죄를 지어서 교회에서 징계를 받았습니다. 또, 어떤 장로님은 물품이 유통기간이 지난 것에 새로운 종이를 붙여 사용하고, 어떤 큰 교회는 담임목사님은 반대에도 불구하고 아들에게 교회를 물려주고, 어떤 교회는 교인들끼리 싸우고, 어떤 교회는 영주권을 해준다고 돈을 받고는 사기를 쳤다고 합니다.  교회를 오래 다니고 더 많이 참여하다 보면 더 많은 실수, 죄, 타락 등을 볼 수도 있습니다. 이런 일들이 교회에 일어나는 이유는 교회가 완벽한 의인들이 모인 곳이 아니라 죄인들이 모인 곳이기 때문입니다. 세상과 차이는 자신이 죄인인 것을 인정하는 죄인들이 모인 곳이 교회입니다. 

사실, 세상의 어떤 공동체보다도 대부분의 교회와 교인들은 좀 더 악을 덜 행하는 편입니다. 그럼에도 세상 사람들은 교회는 예수님을 믿으니 좀 더 말이나 행실이 선하고 악을 멀리하기를 바라는 것입니다.  그러면 교회에 상처받았다고 하는 사람에게 어떻게 대해야 할까요? 먼저, 우리가 비전교회를 통해서 배우고 연습한 대로 하나님을 믿는 사람의 진짜 선한 모습을 행실로 보여 주어야 합니다. 그중 가장 대표적인 것이 섬김입니다. 섬김은 나의 필요보다 상대방의 필요를 우선으로 생각하고 그 필요를 채워 주는 것입니다. 예를 들면, 나는 쉬고 싶지만 상대방이 대화할 상대가 필요하다면 일정 시간을 내어 이야기를 진심으로 들어주는 것입니다. 두 번째로 할 수 있는 것은 진심으로 사과하는 것입니다. 우리가 직접 상처를 준 것은 아니지만, 한 사람의 성도로서도 그들에게 사과함으로 위로가 되는 경우도 있습니다. 세 번째는, ‘그럼에도, 교회에 가야 합니다.’라고 이야기해 주십시오. 왜냐하면, 교회는 단순한 사람들의 모임이 아니라 하나님 아버지를 함께 예배하고 믿음이 성장하는 학습장이요, 또한 그런 분들도 진짜를 보고 치유받을 수 있는 종합병원과 같기 때문입니다.  

I had a chance to have a dialogue with someone, and he told me that he doesn’t go to church anymore because of corruption in the church and how people speak rudely. I told him I am sorry as a pastor and Christian, although I wasn’t even there when he experienced those. Even for me, I often witnessed negative events of the church while I experienced even more miracles, grace, and changes within. One deacon received disciplinary action for a cause, and one pastor from a church resigned because of a scandal. One Elder used expired products, retaping fake expiration labels. One pastor designates his own son as a successor of the church despite opposition from the general assembly. There are quarrels amongst church members in some churches. One Church even committed green card fraud against a church member. You may experience many neglects, sins, corruptions, and other misconducts as you attend the church for a long time. These things happen in church because the church is where sinners gather, not those who are flawless. 

The only difference between us and the world is that we admit that we are sinners. Indeed, some churches may commit more misconduct compared to other worldly organizations. However, people expect us to do better and stay away from evil as a church because we believe in Jesus. If so, how do we approach those who claim they got hurt by the church? First, we must show we are doing the right thing as a man/woman of God, as we learned and practiced in Vision church. The best thing to do is to serve. To serve means to think and fill the needs of others prior to my own. For example, it is to spend time listening to others wholeheartedly if they need someone to talk to, even if I want to relax. Second, you can apologize sincerely. Even though we didn’t have anything to do with it, we may provide comfort to those who need it by saying “I’m Sorry” earnestly. Third, say, “You need to go to church no matter what.” Because the church is not just a gathering place. Rather, it is like a general hospital where we receive healing from the deep within by witnessing a real thing as we worship our Heavenly Father and grow in faith together.
