Managing Emotions (03/29/26)

Emotion is a psychological state of reaction against external stimuli or internal thoughts. We may categorize our emotions as positive, negative, simple, complex, and others. However, we can further separate our emotions, such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, love, depression, envy, shame, guilt, anxiety, etc. It is not easy to explain a single emotion amongst those emotions in depth professionally, so I will not dive further. However, it is very important to manage our emotions well since emotions play an important role in our daily lives. Many shared during daily conversation or Bible study sessions that emotional control is one of the most difficult things to manage in their life. Indeed, external factors don’t determine our emotions, but the way we see our external factors can change our emotions. For example, let’s say someone cuts you off in the driving lane. If you think “that guy must be busy,” you won’t get angry that much. But if you perceive it as “how rude that guy cuts in right in front of me,” then you would be angry. On a normal day, we may get angry because of the way our spouse, family member, or other people do or talk.

We may get angry if our customers complain about their dishes at our restaurant. We may get frustrated when our children don’t behave. Especially if we don’t manage our anger well, the anger turns into guilt. Despite the fact that I am still trying to manage my emotions well, I would like to share wisdom that helped me as I learned from my study and counseling experiences when I worked with those who are struggling in emotion management, mental problems, and relationship problems. First, we must think about why we have that emotion in the first place. For example, people tend to get angry when they experience hurtfulness, injustice, unfairness, or fear. Hence, anger is a symptom not a cause by itself. If we get angry because we see something wrong, we must take care of the wrong. Second, we must think about how we express that emotion. It rarely helps you or your relationship with others when you express anger to them. It rather helps more when you talk calmly about it. Third, it is ok to have emotion but we must get help from the Holy Spirit so that we don’t sin. The Bible tells us we stay away from sinning when we manage our emotions (Ephesians 4:26, In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.) Whenever you feel something negative, ask the Holy Spirit for help.
