Multi-ethnic fellowship (05/03/26)

When I went on a short-term mission trip to Mexico a couple of years ago, I had an opportunity to give a sermon during a church anniversary service. I gave a sermon in Korean while the missionary provided translation in Spanish. Besides myself and the missionary, all the brothers and sisters who attended the service were Mexicans. Services are conducted in Spanish to include prayer, praise, and announcement. Then I realized that it is not easy to have a service with those who have different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Furthermore, this gave me a new perspective on multicultural families (spouses from different cultural/linguistic backgrounds), who are attending Korean churches in the US. Our church's goal is to become a multi-ethnic (multicultural) church in June of 2024. The majority of our service is still conducted in Korean. So, we must understand how much effort our non-Korean brothers and sisters are putting into our church. Of course, worship services, Life Bible study series, and other documents have been steadily changing to meet the demand for the multi-cultural church, but we may still feel uncomfortable until we complete the transformation for both Korean and non-Korean church members. Despite all, I am truly grateful to our brothers and sisters of Vision church who are going through this transformation in worship together.

I am also grateful to those who volunteer and sacrifice their time to translate into Spanish, Chinese, English, and Portuguese for the screen. I have been thinking deeply about how to make our vision church family members from multicultural backgrounds feel more like “my church and my family.” So, we hosted a ‘Multi-cultural fellowship’ time. It was a potluck luncheon, bringing and sharing our own food from various cultures. Furthermore, our brothers and sisters introduced themselves and shared their own experiences with our church. This is one of the many ways to try to transform into the HC that saves souls and makes disciples of all nations. Some members couldn’t join due to their schedule conflict; however, about 20 brothers and sisters shared why they like our Vision church. All of the brothers and sisters who attended the luncheon shared that they like our Vision church because of our ‘warm welcome.’ The second common reason why they like our Vision church is that they feel like they are part of the family in the church. The two common words that described our church were “warmth” and “Family”, regardless of differences in culture and language. I am truly grateful for that. Also, those who felt different because of the difference in their skin color and culture amongst Koreans even enjoyed the luncheon as they shared meals and spent time together with laughter and prayer. They would like to have more fellowship like this often. Thank you to those who joined and served for the event.
