I would like to share a column from the House Church ministry homepage written by Rev. Youngki Chai- this really touched me. The mission of HC ministry is to restore the Biblical church as written in the New Testament. So, we used the term ‘HC Spirit.’ Some think this is about HC’s procedures and customs. Some believe it is the 3 axes and 4 pillars of the HC foundation. However, this is not the essence of HC spirit. HC must continue until the day of our Lord's return, if the HC is what our Lord envisioned. So, what we continue to uphold is the core of the HC spirit – it is ‘by the Bible.’ Our procedures and principles may change as time changes, and sometimes the change is inevitable. Also, we may change our foundation and principles of the 3-axis and 4 pillars if we discover a new Biblical principle, despite this being the best and most practical approach. Something that we can’t change is our spirit of ‘by the Bible,’ not some formality or methodology. ‘By the Bible’ means two things. First, ‘understand attributes to read the Bible to find out the intent of the author within the context, not by a theological or ideological paradigm. Second, ‘simple obedience’ means to treat the Bible as a book to live by, not just a book for discussion and research. It is not about following what I understand and agree with, but following even if I don’t understand and feel uncomfortable, because it is written in the Bible.
These two things must be repeatedly practiced so that it may become a habit. Also, even if we have principles and procedures founded upon the spirit of ‘by the Bible,’ we must continue to re-evaluate them against the Bible and refine them. We need ‘flexibility’ appropriate for situations. We must possess ‘diversity’ to encompass differences and diverse perspectives. And we need ‘resiliency’ so that we may adapt to external factors while keeping our original form. These three things are required to maintain our ‘By the Bible’ spirit. We may transform into something totally different from the New Testament church if we keep changing our principles based on situations and convenience. This is only applicable when these flexibility/ diversity/ resiliency requirements are met, and we receive a new understanding throughout the Bible. To build the church our Lord envisioned until His return, we must hold tight to these “By the Bible” and flexibility/diversity/resiliency together. If we keep these two foundations, we can keep the Biblical Church until the day of His return- 100 years, 200 years, or 500 years more.
