우리들 이야기

여러분은 고국(고향 나라)과 살고 있는 나라를 위해 기도하십니까? 예를 들면, 한국에서 태어난 분의 고국은 대한민국이고, 살고 있는 나라는 미국입니다. 성경은 나라와 공무원들을 위해 기도하라고 분명하게 가르칩니다. 대표적인 성경구절은 바울의 서신에 있습니다. (디모데전서 2:1 그러므로 나는 무엇보다도 먼저, 모든 사람을 위해서 하나님께 간구와 기도와 중보 기도와 감사 기도를 드리라고 그대에게 권합니다. 2 왕들과 높은 지위에 있는 모든 사람을 위해서도 기도하십시오. 그것은 우리가 경건하고 품위 있게, 조용하고 평화로운 생활을 하기 위함입니다. 3 이것은 우리 구주 하나님께서 보시기에 좋은 일이며, 기쁘게 받으실 만한 일입니다.) 이 구절에 보면, 기도의 대상으로 왕들과 높은 지위에 있는 모든 사람을 위해 기도하라고 했는데, 오늘날의 대통령과 국회의원과 주지사와 시장과 공무원들입니다. 그리고 이어서 그렇게 기도해야 할 이유에 대해서 설명하는데, 그렇게 기도함으로 우리가 경건하고 품위 있게(안전하게), 조용하고 평화로운 생활을 하기 위함이라고 합니다. 

또한 3절에서 이것이 하나님이 보시기 기쁘게 받으실 만한 일이라고 했는데, 이 말은 그런 기도를 하나님이 좋아하시고 들어주신다는 뜻입니다. 여러분의 고국의 현재 상황은 어떠신가요? 지금 한국은 정치적으로 무척 혼란스럽습니다. 미국도 정책이 시시각각 바뀌면서 전문가들도 새로운 변화를 다 따라가기 힘들다고 합니다. 국민들의 생업이 어렵고, 청년 실업자가 늘어나고, 물가는 계속 오르고 있는데도 국민을 위한 정치라기 보다는 자신의 이념과 이익을 위해 정치를 한다고 국민들로부터 비판을 받고 있습니다. 그리스도인들이 한 국민으로서 할 일은 많이 있습니다. 최대한 투표에 참여 하고, 때로는 정치적 소신을 발표하고, 적극적으로 정치인이나 공무원이 되어서 하나님을 두려워하고 국민을 위하는 좋은 모델이 될 수도 있습니다. 그런데 이 중에서 가장 쉽게 누구나 언제나 할 수 있는 것이 바로 나라를 위해 기도하는 것입니다. 저는 나라를 위해 기도할 때 이렇게 크게 세 가지를 위해 기도합니다. 먼저 정치인들과 공무원들이 하나님을 두려워하고 하나님의 정의를 실천하도록 기도합니다. 또한 교육, 경제, 사회, 문회 등 안정이 되어 국민들이 평화롭게 살수 있도록 기도합니다. 마지막은, 교회가 교회답고 기독교인이 기독교인 다워서 나라에서 빛과 소금이 되는 것입니다. 

Do you pray for your country, where you are from, and where you are living? For example, those who are born in Korea, their homeland is Korea while they are living in the US. The Bible surely teaches us to pray for our nation and civil servants. The most well-known verses are from the letter from Paul. (1 Timothy chapter 2- 1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior) This verse tells us to pray for kings and all those in authority, they are equivalent to today’s president, congressmen, governors, mayors, and other civil servants. And then, Paul explained to us why we must pray for them- it is because so that we may live peaceful and quiet lives. Also, verse 3 tells us that it is good and pleases God, this means God likes and accepts this kind of prayers. How is your motherland? Korea is facing political turmoil. 

Even here in the US, even experts can’t keep up with current rapid changes in public policies. Politicians are facing public criticism- they put their own ideology and interests first before people while people struggle with their daily life, many young people face unemployment, and inflation continues upward, Current leadership is facing criticism. As a responsible citizen, there are many things Christians can do. Christians must vote as much as possible. Sometimes, Christians need to express their political belief. Christians even actively become politicians or public servants to serve as good role models who fear God and love the people they serve. However, among all these things, the easiest thing that any Christian can do is to pray for the nation. I pray three things when I pray for the nation. First, I pray that politicians and civil servants may fear God and practice His Justice. Also, I pray for stability in education, economy, society and culture so that citizens may live in peace. Lastly, I pray that the Church will become more like the church, and Christians be more like Christians so that we may become the light and salt for the nation.
