우리들 이야기

미국에 있는 한인 교회에는 독특한 문화들이 많이 있습니다. 특히 자주 쓰는 말 중에 미국적 사고에서 나온 영어이기보다는 한국인이 생각한 영어를 사용한 경우가 있습니다. 대표적인 말이 바로 KM(Korean Ministry)과 EM(English Ministry)입니다. KM이란 한국어권 교회를 말하고, EM이란 영어를 말하는 주로 1.5세나 2세를 위한 교회입니다. 그런데 EM(English Ministry)라는 말을 들으면 보통의 미국인들은 영어를 가르치는 사역정도로 생각합니다. 그래서 최근에 사용되기 시작한 단어는 영어를 말하는 회중, 즉 ESC(English Speaking Congregation)입니다. 우리 교회에는 Harvest라는 영어 회중이 있습니다. 그러면 비전교회가 다민족을 위한 교회로 가는 것과 하베스 교회와 관계가 무엇인가 질문할 수 있습니다. 하베스트는 영어를 하는 자녀나 회중들이 모인 교회입니다. 그래서 처음에는 비전교회에 왔다가 하베스트로 간 몇 명의 영어권 가족들이 있습니다. 즉, 하베스트 교회에도 비전교회가 다민족 교회로 가는 것이 도움이 됩니다. 비전교회는 지금까지는 한어를 위한 교회였지만, 이제는 한국어, 영어, 중국어, 스페인어, 포르투갈어, 그리고 어떤 언어를 사용하든 언어와 문화와 관계없이 모든 민족을 위한 교회입니다. 

그래서 구지 표현을 하자면 하베스트교회는 ESC이고, 비전교회는 모든 민족교회, 즉 All Nations Congregation(ANC)입니다.  그래서 비전교회 가족들에게 부탁합니다. 앞으로는 비전교회를 KM이라고 표현하지 마시기 바랍니다. 가정교회의 정신은 ‘단순한 성경 이해’입니다. 즉, ‘성경이 하라면 하고, 하지 말라면 하지 않는 것’. 성경이 그렇다면 그런 줄 알고, 아니라면 아닌 줄 아는 것.’입니다. 비전교회가 한인만을 위한 교회에서 모든 민족을 위한 교회로 변화하는 과정 중에 있는데, 이는 성경에 있는 예수님의 명령을 단순히 순종하려는 것입니다. 마태복음28:19 “그러므로 너희는 가서, 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아서, 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 주고, 20 내가 너희에게 명령한 모든 것을 그들에게 가르쳐 지키게 하여라. 보아라, 내가 세상 끝날까지 항상 너희와 함께 있을 것이다.” 여기에서 ‘모든 민족’은 나라도 되지만 언어별 구분을 뜻합니다. 모든 나라, 모든 언어를 하는 사람에게 가서 제자 삼으라는 주님의 명령을 순종하는 것입니다.  

There are many peculiar cultures in the Korean Church in America. Some words we used came from a Korean cultural background rather than a US cultural background. Good examples are KM (Korean Ministry) and EM (English Ministry). KM is for ministry for Korean-Speaking congregations, while EM is designated for English speaking congregation, mainly 1.5 generation and 2nd generation Korean. However, if a normal American hears the word EM (English ministry, that person might think of the ministry of teaching English or something like that. Because of this, some churches start using the word ESC (English Speaking Congregation) for this ministry. Our church does have an English speaking Congregation church, Harvest church. Then, some may ask about the relationship between Harvest church and Church of All Nations. The English-speaking congregation and our English-speaking children are gathered in Harvest Church. So, some moved from Vision Church to Harvest church because of their English-speaking background. That means, Harvest Church helps as we move toward the direction of becoming a church of all nations. Vision church used to be a church for Korean-Speaking Congregations. 

Now we are an All Nations Church for any language of congregation that we may speak-Korean, English, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, etc. So if we must distinguish, Harvest church is for ESC, Vision church is for a church for all nations that is ANC-All Nations Congregations. So if I may, I ask my vision church family members. Please do not say Vision Church is the KM church. Spirit of House church is ‘Simple understanding of the Bible.’ That means if the Bible tells us so, do it; if the Bible tells us not to, don’t do it. If the Bible says so, believe so; if the Bible says not, then we don’t accept it. Vision Church is on the path of transforming from Korean only church to a church of all nations. This is simply to follow the command of Jesus. In the book of Matthew 28:19-20, “19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” The word “All Nations” in this verse may mean different nations as well as different languages at the same time. This is to follow and obey the command of our Lord to make disciples regardless of nationality as well as spoken languages.
