우리들 이야기

지난 7월 21-24일에 엘에이의 바이올라 대학에서 280명이 참석한  뉴젠목자컨퍼런스가 있었습니다. 이 컨퍼런스에는 교사, 교육 목회자, 부모, 대학생, 청년, 중고등학생이 참여했습니다. 이 일을 미라클랜드 교회의 백동진 목사님과 우리교회 나지혜 전도사님이 전체 기획과 준비를 했습니다. 이번에 김인기 파송목사님은 15인승 승합차를 랜트해서 공항에 오는 참석자들을 라이드했습니다. 우리 교회에서 주지영자매, 김창애 자매, 김헬렌 자매와 Aaron Hines형제와 다니엘 장 전도사와 제가 참석해서 강의를 하거나 참석자들을 돌보는 사역을 했습니다.  40명이 비행기를 타고 이동하는 것도, 오고 가는 길에 식사와 일정을 조절하는 것도 쉽지 않았습니다. 하지만, 이번 컨퍼런스가 저에게 큰 의미가 있습니다. 첫째, 저는 새 세대를 위해 더욱 헌신해야 겠다는 결심을 하였습니다. 다음 세대(next generation)라 하지 않고, 새 세대(new generation)라고 부르는데 이유가 있습니다. 다음 세대라고 하는 것은 현재 기성세대의 관점으로서 자신들이 현 세대이고 자녀들은 아직은 의미가 없는 다음에 일할 세대라는 것입니다.  

하지만 백동진 목사님은 새 세대의 관점으로 보면 자신들도 같은 시대를 살고 있고 의미있는 세대라는 것입니다. 그래서 이번 컨퍼런스 수요일 밤에는 새 세대와 기성 세대 부모와 목회자와 목자들이 다 같이 모여서 서로를 위해 축복하며 기도하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 제 양쪽 옆에 두 고등부 아이들은, 제가 이전에 한번도 가까이에 같이 앉아 본적이 없었는데, 이번에 이야기도 나누고 축복하고 간절히 기도해 주면서 많은 눈물이 났습니다. 그리고 주위에 서로를 위해 부모와 사역자와 서로를 위해 기도하는 청소년들을 보니, 역시 간절히 눈물로 기도하고 찬양하고 있었습니다. 예수님을 처음 구원자로 영접하는 아이들도 있었습니다. 그래서 새 세대를 위해 더욱 헌신해야겠다는 마음이 불처럼 솟아났습니다. 둘째, 주일학교 교사와 어린이/청소년 사역자들과의 만남으로 더욱 교회학교에 관심을 가지고 섬겨야 겠다는 결심을 했습니다. 지금까지는 사역자와 교사들에게 맡겨 놓고선, 필요한 것이 있는지 물어보거나 지원하는 것이 약했던 것을 알게 되었습니다. 청장년 뿐 아니라 청소년과 어린이의 영혼을 제자만들기 위해 교사들의 필요을 듣고 같이 전략을 세우려

There was HC conference for New Generation HC leaders at Biola University, Los Angeles, CA, from July 21st to July 24th. About 280 people attended the event. Teachers, education pastors, parents, College students, young adults, and youth group members joined this conference. Rev. Daniel Beik from Miracle Land Baptist Church and our own Pastor Jeannie Na organized this event. Rev. Inki Kim, our dispatched pastor, rented 15 15-passenger van and provided a ride for attendees to and from the airport. Sister Jenny Lee, sister April Kim, sister Helen Kim, Brother Aaron Hines, and pastor Daniel Chang from our church participated in this conference by providing breakout sessions and/or care for attendees. It was not an easy task to provide a flight for 40 people and coordinate the schedule during the trip to include meals and other incidentals. However, this conference was very meaningful to me. First, I made a commitment to the new generation. We called it ‘new generation’, not ‘next generation’, for a reason. If we say next generation, this implies the established generation is what matters today, and the next generation does not matter yet until their turn. The term “next generation” implies the perspective from the established generation as a current generation. 

However, Rev Beik shared that if we see the same viewpoint from a new generation, the new generation is also living in the same time and space. The new generation also matters. Hence,  Wednesday night during this conference, we had a prayer session with mutual blessing to another, gathering new generations and established generations, parents and pastors altogether. When I bless and pray earnestly for the youth group children on my left and right of me, tears come out, as this is my first time to interact with them this closely. Other youth group children around me also pray for their parents and pastors, earnestly with tears, prayers, and praises. Some received Jesus as their Lord for the first time. Commitment to the new generation spread like a wildfire to me. Second, I made a commitment to give more focus and energy to Sunday School by spending more time with Sunday school teachers and volunteers from youth groups. Until now, I delegated to Sunday school ministers and teachers, but I didn’t do much of follow-up and support. Not only for adult members, but now we need to make a strategy for saving souls and making disciples for youth groups and young children. For this cause, I am going to work with Sunday School teachers.
