우리들 이야기

이번에 말씀잔치 강사로 오실 신동일 목사님은 제가 좋아하고 존경하는 1.5세 한인 목사님입니다. 한국에서 태어나 어릴 때에 미국으로 이민을 와서 한국어도 잘 하고 영어도 잘 합니다. 제가 신 목사님을 좋아하는 이유는 두가지 입니다. 첫째, 신목사님은 열정이 있습니다. 영어권 교회를 가정교회 정신으로 열정적으로 섬겨 다민족 성인 500명이 넘는 교회로 부흥을 했습니다. 가정교회를 돕는 것이라면 교회가 크든 작든 달려가서 말씀을 전하십니다. 둘째, 솔직합니다. 마음에 품은 감정이나 생각을 남에게 솔직하게 표현해서 두 마음을 품지 않습니다. 신목사님은 이렇게 자신을 소개했습니다.- 평안남도에서 사셨던 저의 증조 할아버지는 기독교인이었다고 합니다. 그러니 저는 4대째 기독교 집안에서 자란 사람입니다. 한국에 있을 때, 어머니와 첫째, 둘째 누나들은 집에서 거리가 좀 떨어져 있던 장로교회에 다녔고 저와, 셋째 누나 그리고 남동생은 집 근처에 있었던 감리교회에 다녔습니다. 미국에 오기 일년 전에 모든 식구가 어머니가 다니던 장로교회로 합류했습니다.  

1978년 2월에 뉴욕으로 이민을 왔습니다. 중학교 1학년을 마친 때였습니다. 이모부가 퀸즈한인교회를 개척하시고 목회를 하고 계셨는데 저의 식구들은 자연스럽게 그 교회에 출석을 하게 되었습니다. 퀸즈한인교회는 그 당시 성령운동을 하는 교회로 소문이 나 있었습니다. 교회 생활을 어려서부터 했지만 예수님을 참으로 만난 것은 1982년 9월 전교인 가족 수련회에서 였습니다. 그 때 제 나이가 18세 였고 그 때부터 저의 참다운 신앙생활이 시작되었습니다. 1988년 뉴욕 주립대학에서 역사와 철학을 전공하고 졸업한 후 같은 해에 보스턴 근교에 있는 Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary 에 입학을 해서 1992년 M. Div 을 취득하고 졸업을 했습니다. 보스턴에서 조그마한 한인 침례교회를 목회하게 되었습니다. 그 때 최영기 목사님을 알게 되었고 최목사님의 초청으로 1994년 12월 휴스턴 서울 침례교회의 청소년부 목사로 부임해 1997년 8월에 New Life Fellowship 이라는 영어회중을 시작했습니다. 저의 신앙생활의 여정중에 감리교회, 장로교회, 성령운동하는 교회, 침례교회를 접할 수 있었고 1994년부터 지금까지 한 교회에서 31년 동안 목회하는 축복을 경험하고 있는 행복한 목사입니다.  

Our guest speaker for the upcoming Bible Festival is Rev. Eric Shin. He is a 1.5-generation Korean Pastor whom I like and respect. 1.5 generations are those who migrated to the US from Korea at a young age, so they are proficient in both Korean and English. There are two reasons why I like him. First, he is passionate. He multiplied the number of his congregation to over 500 adult members when he served the English congregation with the spirit of House Church passionately. He is always at the first of the line to support and help HC no matter how big or small. Second, he is honest. He is a man of integrity. When he says something, he means that. Rev. Shin introduced him as follows: My Great Grandfather is a Christian from Pyeongannam-Do, North Korea. This means I am the fourth-generation Christian of my family. When I lived in Korea, my mother and two of my sisters attended the Presbyterian church located a little further from home, while my brother, one sister, and I attended the Baptist church near home. A year before we moved to the US, our whole family went to the same church that my mother and sisters attended. 

We moved to New York in February of 1978, when I completed 7th grade in Korea. My uncle started the Korean Church of Queens, New York, so naturally, all our family attended the church. Back in the days, KCQNY was famous for their Holy Spirit movement ministry at that time. I went to the church for a long time, but I met Jesus personally in September of 1882 during the church retreat. That is when my true life as a Christian began; I was 18 years old. In 1988, I studied and received a bachelor’s degree in history and philosophy from the State University of New York. I continued my education at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in the same year. I received an M.Div in 1992 from the seminary. I started my ministry with a small Korean Baptist Church in Boston. I met Rev. YoungKi Chai at that time, and he offered me to be of a youth group pastor for the Seoul Baptist Church of Houston. I started a New Life Fellowship for English-speaking congregants in August of 1997 for the Church. Throughout my life of faith, I have experienced with Methodist church, the Presbyterian church, the  Church with Holy Spirit movement ministry, and the Baptist church. I am a happy pastor who is experiencing the blessing of serving one church for 31 years since 1994.
