“Mission” means to go and share the Words of God to others in different cultures. Being an introvert, I don’t like to travel and don’t feel comfortable meeting others even if we share the same national background. It even scares me to meet and do something for those who are in different cultural backgrounds and do something for them. However, the mission came to me naturally after I committed to HC. I now have a vision for a mission for all nations and globalization because of our HCs' efforts of prayer and offering for mission, naming HCs after mission areas, and hearing testimonies from missionaries at our church. Then it came to my mind- I want to visit and treat those HC praying and serving missionaries in their mission areas. It will not be easy. So I shared this with the assembly and HC leaders, suggesting two ways to join the mission. First, starting next year, we will invite and pay for a week-long trip for a missionary and his/her family. The purpose is to listen to their testimony for 3 days. Then, we offer the missionary and his/her family to have quality time together for recharging and relaxation. Supporting HC would pay for the missionary and his/her family's flight, and the rest of the lodging and trip costs are covered by the church. Resemblance of Christ Korean Church (ROCK) of Dallas is currently practicing this method.
ROCK even shared that many missionaries are greatly encouraged and boosted a lot by this method. Also, this mission festival allows HC members to pray in greater detail as they listen to firsthand testimony from the missionaries. Second, an actual short-term mission trip. Our church members may support with testimony, medical support, haircut, and/or construction projects based on the request from missionaries. But this method may give another burden to missionaries as this requires constant translation and ministry by the missionary throughout the trip. So the American church mission model is the Member-Care model. In the Member-Care model, those short-term mission members go to mission fields for non-mission-related purposes-they treat missionaries. They spend time together with the missionary and his/her spouse, traveling to tourist attractions in the area, treating them with nice meals, and offering counseling services if the spouse or children of the missionaries ask. My plan is to visit the mission field and do missions if they need support. I would like to practice the member care model if a missionary needs a recharge. I might do both if required. Participating a mission is a privilege.
