우리들 이야기

모든 사람은 자신이 안전하다고 느끼는 안전지대(Safe Zone)가 있습니다. 예를 들면, 학교나 교회에 가면 항상 같은 자리에 앉습니다. 다른 자리에 앉으면 왠지 불편하고 불안함을 느끼기 때문입니다. 새로운 인물이 정치인이나 담임 선생님으로 오면 마음을 열지 않고 불편함을 느끼기도 합니다. 안전지대에 머무는 사람은 새 법을 바꾸는 것도 싫고, 새로운 곳에 여행을 가는 것도 새로운 식당에 가는 것도 좋아하지 않지요. 통계에 따르면 사람들의 50%이상이 이 변화를 싫어 한다고 합니다. 성경은 굉장히 급진적/근본적(Radical)인 면이 있습니다. Radical적인 이유는 율법이나 전통에 머물지 말고 하나님의 나라라는 근본 테두리(Root) 안에서 죄인들을 품고, 사랑하고, 찾아가는 급진적인 면이 있기 때문입니다. 

예수님은 당시에 혐오와 배신의 상징으로 여겨졌던 세금거두는 사람들을 찾아가 전도하셨고, 죄인의 대표로 여겨졌던 창녀들에게도 복음을 전하셨습니다. 사회에 소외된 고아와 가난한 사람들과 같이 식사하고 하나님 나라의 말씀을 전하셨습니다. 그래서 복음은 Radical합니다. 이런 것을 우리 신앙생활에 어떻게 적용해 볼 수 있을까요? 아주 작게는 익숙한 것에 메이지 않아야 겠습니다. 주보를 바꾸거나 예배 순서를 바꾼다고 불편해 하면 안됩니다. 예배는 우리의 마음이 편리를 위한 것이 아니라 하나님을 높이고 찬양하는 것이 가장 중요합니다. 그래서 하나님을 높이는데 방해가 되고 은혜가 안 되면 언제든 순서는 바꾸고, 앞에선 목회자와 성도간에 거리감을 준다면 강대상을 바꿀수도 있고, 찬양대의 필요에 따라 피아노 위치를 바꿀수 있어야 하고, 대표기도자가 양복이 없지만 단정이 입고 와도 이해해야 합니다. 이런 것들은 본질이 아니기 때문입니다. 안전지대에 있으려는 욕구가 율법주의 형식주의를 만들고, '내 뜻대로'를 만드는 위험이 있습니다.  

All have their comfort zone called Safe Zone. For Example, we always try to sit in the same seat at the school or the church. It is because we may feel uncomfortable or anxious if we sit in different seats. we may close ourselves and feel uncomfortable if we have a new politician for the district or a new teacher for the homeroom. Those who prefer in their safe zone, are reluctant to change- don't like to change rules, don't want to explore, nor want to try a new restaurant. According to statistics, about 50% of people don't like changes. The Bible is quite radical in some aspects. The Bible is radical because it is all about going over the safe zone. It is all about going over the zone of law and traditions, embracing sinners, and loving them within the root of God's Kingdom. 

Jesus preached the Good News to tax collectors, who were the symbol of betrayal and hatred, as well as prostitutes, who were a social example of sinners. Furthermore, Jesus ate together and preached the Good News to social outcasts- like orphans and the poor. That is why Good News is Radical. How can we apply this in our daily life of Faith? For a start, we should not get used to what we are used to. We may feel uncomfortable when we change the format of a weekly pamphlet or change in worship order. Worship is not about peace of mind, but it is all about exalting and praising God. If there is no value added to praise or exalt God, we may change the agenda. We may change our pulpit setting if it makes feel us distant from each other. We may change the position of the piano if there is a need from our Choir. We may need to understand if one, who leads the prayer, wears neat clothing without a suit. All of these things are not a matter of principle. Our desire to stay in our safe zone, results in legalism and formalism. This may result in a danger of becoming "my will" not God’s will.
