우리들 이야기

사도신경은 2세기 경에 세례받는 분에게 기독교가 무엇을 믿는지를 가르치는 것이었습니다. 이것은 성경 전체의 내용을 요약해서 우리가 믿는 것을 잘 정리했습니다. 예배의 한 순서가 아니라 마치 성경공부 같은 것이었습니다. 장로교와 몇 교단에서는 이 가르침이 중요하다고 생각해서 예배에 사도신경을 고백하기 했습니다. 하지만 점차 의미없이 읽는 예배의 한 순서로 되었다고 느낀 교단이나 교회는 사도신경을 아예 하지 않습니다. 한국을 방문한 한 장로님은 4개 장로교회를 방문했는데, 한 교회도 사도신경을 하지 않았다고 합니다.  최근은 카톨릭교회와 몇 교단의 일부교회만 시행합니다. 시대가 지나면서 몇십년 몇 백년동안 예배에 반복적으로 사도신경을 읽거나 암송을 하다보니 은혜가 안 되다고 생각한 것입니다. 선배 목회자들은 ‘은혜롭지 않은 예배 순서는 생략하는 것이 좋다.’라는 가르쳤습니다. 

사실, 많은 목회자들이나 성도들이 매주 무언가를 똑 같은 것을 반복하면 지루하게 생각하고 의미를 잃습니다. 우리교회에도 사도신경을 꼭 해야하는지에 대한 질문이 있었습니다. 하지만 저는 사도신경의 내용과 가르침이 좋다고 생각합니다. 이런 이야기를 당회에서 나누어서 결정한 것은 사도신경을 너무 하지 않는 것도 좋지 않고, 또 매주하는 것도 의미없이 몇 십년 째 기계적으로 읽는 것 같아서, ‘시범적으로’ 6개월간 한달에 한번만 첫째주에 사도신경을 읽기로 하였습니다. 이럴 경우에 장점은 예배에 매주 습관적으로 반복하는 것을 피할 수 있고 더 은혜와 능력이 있는 예배 분위기가 될 수 있습니다. 또한 한달에 한번 사도신경을 읽음으로 기독교의 핵심 가르침을 가르칠 수 있고 매주마다 하지 않기 때문에 새로운 느낌도 들수 있습니다. 예배 시간의 변경이나 사도신경도같은 순서를 수정하는 것도 율법이나 교리가 아닙니다. 오랫동안 교회에 다닌 분들이 익숙한 예배의 형태입니다. 본질은 찬양을 한 곡 부르더라도, 기도를 한 마디 하더라도, 설교를 짧게나 길게 하더라도, 그 예배에서 하나님을 높여드리고 하나님을 만나는 것입니다.

 Apostles’ Creed originated in the 2nd Century to teach what we believe to those who were receiving baptism. It provides a summary of the Bible and well-organized our faith. It was more like a Bible study session rather than a part of a worship service. Presbyterian church and other denominations realized the importance of the Apostles’ Creed and start reciting during the worship service. However, some denominations realized that this became a meaningless recital portion of the service so stop reciting the Apostles’ Creed during the service. One Elder visited 4 Presbyterian churches in Korea, but none of those churches recited it during the service. Recently only the Catholic Church and some churches of a few denominations practice it. As time changed, repeated reading or reciting of the Apostles Creed for years didn’t add any grace to worship. Those Pastors before us taught us that we may pass anything that doesn’t add any grace to worship. Indeed, if ministers or congregations keep repeating the same thing every week, they may feel bored and lose the true meaning behind it. Some of our church members even asked the same question about whether we had to do the Apostles’ Creed during the service. 

However, I do believe the Apostles’ Creed is beneficial to us- what it has within and what it teaches. Our General Assembly has convened and decided that we have a ‘trial period’ for 6 months, starting next month to recite the Apostles’ Creed only on the first Sunday service of the month. This was decided after discussing that it is not good if we don’t recite the Apostles’ Creed at all nor recite meaninglessly every week because we have been doing this for years automatically. The benefit of this is that we may avoid repeating the Apostle's creed as a habit. Also, this adds more grace and provides a more powerful worship experience. Another benefit is that we may remind the core of Christianity by reciting the Apostles’ Creed once a month. The reciting Apostles’ Creed may touch us differently as we recite it only once a month. It is not a matter of Church law or doctrine to change worship service time or shuffle how we do the Worship, just like we may move the order of when we recite the Apostles’ Creed. This is a worship style used by those who have attended church for a long time. What is important is we worship to exalt and meet God during the service- even if we sing only one song, pray with one sentence, or listen to a quick sermon.
