우리들 이야기

Money talks’라는 말은 "돈이 말한다", “돈이면 다 된다", "돈이 최고다"라는 의미로 사용되는 영어 관용구입니다. 사람이 일상에서 먹고, 입고, 자고, 일하는 생활의 대부분은 돈을 쓰고 버는 것과 연관이 있기 때문에 돈은 중요합니다. 그래서 성경은 돈을 어떻게 사용하는가에 따라 돈이 복이 될수 있고, 저주가 될수도 있다고 가르칩니다. 먼저, 우리는 돈에 대해서 청지기(관리자)라는 마음을 가져야 합니다. 대표적인 성경구절은 마태복음 25:14-30절이라고 할 수 있습니다. 한 주인이 세 종에게 각각 한 달란트, 두 달란트, 다섯 달란트를 주고 떠났는데, 돌아와서는 충성스럽게 일해서 남긴 사람에게는 착하고 충성된 종이라고 칭찬하는 것입니다. 이 당시 달란트는 노동자가 16-20년 벌어야 하는 돈입니다. 연봉이 3천불을 버는 사람으로 계산하면 6억이 넘는 금액이겠지요. 이 성경구절에서 중요한 것은 돈과 시간과 능력과 지식과 경험등을 하나님께서 우리에게 달란트(기회)로 주셔서 우리가 관리하게 하셨다는 것입니다. 

우리는 돈의 주인이 아니라 관리자이기 때문에 정관리를 위해 수입과 지출을 잘 관리하고, 또 전자기기나 차를 살 때 충동구매도 조심해야 합니다. 둘째는, 우리가 가진 돈은 먹을 것과 심을 것이 있음을 알아야 합니다. (고후9:10 심는 사람에게 심을 씨와 먹을 양식을 공급하여 주시는 하나님께서, 여러분에게도 씨를 마련하여 주시고, 그것을 여러 갑절로 늘려 주시고, 여러분의 의의 열매를 증가시켜 주실 것입니다.)  여기서 ‘먹을 양식’은 우리 자신과 가족을 위해 여행하고 집을 사는데 사용하는 것들입니다. 아무리 기근이 있어도 심을 씨를 먹으면 안됩니다. ‘심을 씨’는 하나님께 드리고 다른 사람에게 사랑을 실천하기 위한 돈입니다. 심을 씨는 율법이 아니라, 하나님께 믿음과 사랑과 감사의 표현입니다. 마태복음 6장은 우리의 참된 보물을 하늘에 쌓아두라고 하고, 우리는 돈과 하나님을 동시에 섬길수 없다고 합니다. 자신을 위해 돈을 절약하며 잘 사용하세요. 구별해서 십일조, 감사, 선교헌금 등을 하여 하늘에 쌓아두세요. 다른 사람을 위해 음식하고 섬김는 기회들로 많이 심어서 하늘과 땅의 복을 많이 받으세요.  

Money talks’ is an English idiom, meaning you can do anything with money. It doesn’t mean literally that money does speak in words. Money is really important and closely related to our daily life- eating, buying clothing, sleeping, and living daily life does involve spending and earning money. Hence, the Bible teaches us how money could be a blessing and curse depending on how we treat money. First of all, we must know that we are stewards (manager) of money. Most notable Bible verse about money can be found in the book of Matthew 25:14-30. A master entrusted one, two, and three talents to his servants and left the town. When he returned, he praised those who worked and left a gain from the talents he entrusted as a good and faithful servant. During this Biblical time, one talent is equivalent to 15-20year salary for a normal wage worker. If one makes about $ 30,0000 a year, one talent is about $ 600,000. What’s important in this Bible verse is that God entrusted these talents (opportunities) so that we can manage based on our time, capability, knowledge, and experience. 

We are not the owner of the money but the steward so that we must manage it well- managing earnings and expenses while keeping us from impulsive spending when purchasing electric gadgets or vehicles. Second, we must know that our money must be allocated between spending and investing money. (2 Corinthian 9:10 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.) In this verse, ‘bread for food’ is the money that we spend for our family like traveling, buying a house, etc. We should not spend our ‘seed to the sower’ no matter even if there is a famine. This ‘seed to the sower’ is money reserved for an offering to God as well as to be spent for others to practice our love. This seed to the sower is not a law but it is our way to show our faith, love, and gratitude toward our God. In the book of Matthew chapter 6 encourages us to store our true treasure in Heaven. Also it tells us that we cannot serve two masters, both God and money, at the same time. Please use money wisely and frugally. Please store up your treasure in heaven by setting apart your tithe, thanksgiving, and mission offerings. I pray that you receive many blessings from heaven and earth by using your resources throughout opportunities of serving others in preparing food or giving goods to others.
