Romans 10:17 says, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” One of the most important things for the growth of a Christian’s faith is the Bible. When we read together and receive grace from the Word of God, who purchased the church with His blood, we can comfort one another, become one in heart, and become a church that pleases the Lord and brings joy to the believers. According to the latest data from the American Bible Society’s 2025 State of the Bible report, Bible use and Bible engagement—two ways of measuring the level of engagement with scripture—are increasing in the United States. Before this year’s report, Bible use had declined to 39% in 2023 and 38% in 2024, but the latest figure has increased to 41%. Surprisingly, 39% of Millennials were found to be reading the Bible, an increase of 9 percentage points from last year, and in particular, the percentage of Generation X (ages 45–60) reading the Bible increased from 37% to 42%. Now, as we enter the fall season, our church also wants to begin a meaningful journey of reading the Bible together as an entire congregation. As I have mentioned several times, from this coming September through December, all of our church members will read through the N.T. together.
At a time when the voices of the world—wars, natural disasters, and political conflicts—are louder than ever and shake our hearts, what we need most is to return once again to “the Word of God.” The words, miracles, and life of Jesus Christ, along with the wisdom and teachings passed down through the apostles in the 260 chapters of the New Testament, will provide refreshing comfort and a renewal of grace, for us as we live our busy daily lives. When we read alone, it is usually easy to stop along the way, but when the whole church reads together, we can finish the journey. Just knowing that the members of your house church beside you are reading the same passage you are reading and meditating on it together will be a great spiritual challenge and encouragement to one another. It takes 10 minutes a day to read three chapters. Turn off smartphones and TV, and listen carefully to God’s voice. Even if you miss a few days along the way, do not give up; simply begin again with the passages from the days you missed. More important than completing the reading is our faithfulness in staying close to the Word. I look forward to seeing all of us finish the year with gratitude, carrying the grace of the Word in our hearts. I joyfully invite you to join this holy movement in which our hearts are renewed through the Word and the whole church becomes one through the Word.
