우리들 이야기

한 자료에 따르면 기독교인이 비기독교인들보다 더 우울이나 죄책감을 느낄수 있다고 합니다. 그 원인은 비기독교인에 비해 도덕적 종교적 기대치가 높은데 그 만큼 자신이 잘 살고 있다고 생각하지 못하기 때문입니다. 먼저 죄책감은 왜 느낄까요? 하나님께서 사람에게 양심을 주셔서 마치 신호등처럼 죄를 짓기 전이나 후에 그것이 죄임을 알게 하신 것입니다. 그런 죄책감이 들 때는 회개하는 것이 가장 좋은 첫번째 단계입니다. 회개는 즉시로, 진심으로, 구체적으로 해야 한다고 많이 설명드렸습니다. 두번째 단계는 죄를 다시 짓지않는 의지적 노력이 필요합니다. 그런데 모든 에너지를 죄를 안 지으려고 노력하기보다는 선을 행하려고 노력하는 것이 좋습니다. 세번째 단계는 남아있는 죄책감의 기억을 다루는 것 입니다. 하나님은 약속하시기를 우리가 진심으로 회개하면 그 죄를 용서하시고 다시는 그 죄를 기억하지 않으신다고 하셨습니다. 

하나님은 우리와 다르십니다. 약속하신 것을 꼭 지키십니다. 그래서 회개했던 죄를 반복해서 죄책감을 가지면 하나님과 더 가까이 친해질 수 없으니 죄책감 대신에 용서해 주심을 감사해야 합니다. 반복해서 죄를 짓는 것은 우리의 죄성과 욕망이 여전히 남아있기 때문입니다. 그러니까 죄를 지었다고 생각 될 때 마다 진심으로 회개하고 죄를 다시 짓지 않으려고 평생 노력하는 것입니다. 죄책감 때문에 아예 포기하고 계속 죄를 짓는 것 보다 낫습니다. 죄책감이 기독교인에게 중요한 문제인 이유는 기독교인의 삶의 목적은 하나님을 사랑하고 그 안에 거해야 하는데, 죄책감은 하나님과의 관계를 멀어지게 합니다. 기도가 되지 않고 구원의 확신에 대해서도 회의적이 되고 봉사할 의욕을 잃어버리게 할 수 있습니다. 여러분이 낙심과 불안과 영적 감각이 약해진 이유가 이런 필요없는 죄책감 때문은 아닌지 잘 살펴보시기 바랍니다. 예수님께서 2천년 전에 하늘나라에서 이 땅에 오셔서 십자가를 지시고 죽어주신 것은 우리의 죄 뿐 아니라 죄책감도 자유케 하기 위함임을 기억하고 그 자유를 누리기 바랍니다.

According to a survey, Christians are more prone to depression and a sense of guilt than non-Christians. The rationale behind this is that Christians tend to have higher ethical and religious standards than non-Christians, but most Christians believe that they don’t meet those standards. Why do we feel guilty? It is because God gave us a conscience. that conscience makes us aware if it is sinful or not before/after you sin, just like traffic signs. The best thing to do is to repent to God when we feel guilty. I mentioned many times that repentance must be done immediately, wholeheartedly, and specifically. Second, we need our conscious effort not to sin again. However, focusing your energy on doing good things rather than struggling not to sin is better. The third step is to control your feeling of guilt that dwells within you. God promised us he would forgive and won’t remember our sins if we repent wholeheartedly. 

God is different from us. He always keeps His Promise. If we continue to feel guilty we can’t have an intimate relationship with God even after we repent. Instead of guilt, have thanksgiving of forgiveness from God. We sin repeatedly because we still have sinful nature and desires. That is why it is our life-long struggle not to sin, by repenting wholeheartedly whenever we are aware of committing sin. It is better to repent than give it up to the sin. Guilt is an important issue to Christians because guilt keeps us from God- our life goal as Christians is to love God and abide in Him. Once you feel guilty, you can’t focus on prayer, stop doubting on assurance of salvation, and lose motives to serve. Check if your frustration, anxiety, and weakened spiritual sense are caused by this unnecessary guilt. Jesus came from Heaven and died on the Cross 2,000 years ago. He did this not only to forgive our sin but also to free us from guilt. Please remind yourself of this and enjoy the freedom that Jesus gave to us.
