우리들 이야기

지난 5월 16-18일에 오래곤에 있는 Village교회를 탐방했습니다. 그 교회를 방문하는 세 가지 목적을 말씀드렸습니다. 첫 번째는 어떻게 다민족 교회를 진행하고 어려움은 어떻게 극복했는지 등을 배우는 것입니다. 이 교회는 선교를 지향하면서 성장하던 교회가, 40여년 전에 담임목사님의 비전으로 다민족 교회로 전향을 시작했습니다. 대부분의 백인들은 다른 민족을 교회로 받아들이면서 문화와 언어적 차이라는 불편함을 ‘기쁘게 기꺼이’ 담당했다고 합니다. 교회와 신앙은 자기가 편하다고 느낄 때 타성에 젖을 수 있기 때문에, 오히려 불편하게 해야 한다는 마음에 동의해 준 것입니다. 강대상의 디자인도, 강단의 배경 색도, 교회 건물의 디자인도, 어린이부서도 모든 민족을 품으려는 배려가 있었습니다. 예를 들면, 설교 때 사용하는 그림도 서양의 알려진 그림만 사용하지 않고, 멕시코나 일본이나 중동에서 만든 그림을 사용해서 다양한 문화에서 온 사람들이 불편하지 않게 했다는 것입니다. 소모임을 할 때도 다양한 문화의 사람들이 참여합니다. 

가장 인상적인 것 중의 하나는 예배 30분 전에 다른 언어를 하는 10명의 성도들이 모여서 자기 모국어로 예배를 위해 중보기도를 한 것입니다. 예배는 영어로 진행 되었지만, 자기 나라의 언어를 포기하지 않아도 되도록 앞에 성경구절은 5개 언어로 자막이 있었습니다. 두 번째 방문 목적은 함께 가는 형제들과 대화도 하고 같이 시간을 보내어 관계를 더 좋게 가지는 것입니다. 그래서 금요일 오후와 토요일 저녁에는 가까운 공원에 가서 사진도 찍고 짧은 시간이지만 산책하며 대화하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 그리고 매일 저녁 일정을 마친 후에, 그 강의나 예배에서 느낀 점을 나누었습니다. 세번째 목적은 가능하면 그 교회에 가정교회를 소개하는 것입니다. 그래서 강의를 해 준 두 분의 목사님에게 가정교회에 대한 책을 선물하고, 우리 비전교회를 소개할 때 저는 가정교회의 세축 네기둥을 소개하였습니다. 또, 두 분의 형제가 목장 목회를 통해 경험한 은혜를 간증하였습니다. 참여한 그 교회 목사님과 성도님이 은혜와 도전이 많이 되었고 부럽다고 했습니다. 기도해 주셔서 감사합니다.  

We visited the Village Church in Oregon from 16 to 18th of May. I already talked about three reasons why we visited the church. First, we would like to learn how they built a church of all nations and overcame challenges. They have shifted their priorities from mission oriented church to a church of all nations as the previous senior pastor shifted the church vision. The majority of white church members were “willing and happy” to take inconveniences arising from differences in culture and languages as they accepted their church to become a church of all nations. The church and our faith easily get complacent as they get comfortable. Rather, members of the church were willing to accept inconvenience for their own good. We found their efforts to embrace other nations as we see podium design, main stage background color, church design, and Sunday school decorations. For example, they were willing to use not only well-known illustrations from western culture but also use diverse but not-so-widely known illustrations from Mexico, the Middle East, and/or Japan during Sunday sermons, so that no one feels uncomfortable. Many people from diverse cultural backgrounds attend the small group meetings as well. 

What impressed me most was that 10 members from different cultural backgrounds gathered 30 minutes prior and prayed in their mother tongue for worship. English was used during the Sunday service; however, 5 different subtitles were offered during the service so that members didn't have to give up their own language.  Second, we wanted to have more time with my church brothers as we spend time together and strengthen our relationship. So, we had time to take a short walk in the park and talk together on Friday afternoon and Saturday evening. And every evening after the scheduled events, we share what we felt and learned about the day from the lecture and worship service. The third purpose of the trip was to introduce the House Church to the Village church, if possible. So we gave a book about HC to two of the pastors who gave us a lecture about the Village church as a token of appreciation. And when the village church introduced us to the congregation, I gave a presentation of HC’s three axes and four pillars. Two of our brothers share their own testimony about HC and its grace. Those pastors and members from the church who participated shared with us that it was graceful and challenged them as well. Thank you all for your prayers.
